Ancient Heritage in Islamic Art

TEHRAN The Sassanid cultural and artistic heritage has been transferred to the literature and philosophy of Islamic era and ancient in this period assumed the concept of Islamic world outlook, said a university Professor Mohammad Khazaei.
He made the statement in his address to the 11th meeting of the series of talks on art, thought and literature in the expanse of Iranian and Islamic culture held in the Art Seminary of Islamic Propagation Organization on September 6. Khazaei said in the Achaemenid and Sassanid eras, we see that decorative, symbolic and abstract aspects of art towers the naturalistic aspect and this artistic heritage extended to Islamic era and this relationship expanded even in Islamic wisdom and philosophy.
On the impact of the philosophical concept of pre-Islamic era on Islamic era in Iran, he said Sohrevardi completes Islamic philosophy by selection and laying stress on special sections of Iran's ancient philosophy.
Khazaei further said that the artists of Islamic era applied symbols in Islamic era that had religious aspect in Sassanid period with some modifications.
He went on to say that orientalists consider Iranian art to be decorative art and stress its decorative aspects and believe that these arts cannot have special concept and philosophy.
They further hold that Islamic art is not simply summarized in superficial aspect, but rather incorporates valuable spiritual concepts and the most important reasons for this argument is the special relationship that has always existed between art and religion in Iran.
Elsewhere in his speech, the university professor said one of the services of Iranian art has been the expansion of symbolism and remoteness from naturalism.
Khazaei said the difference between today's art and that of the past lies in the fact that the past art prevailed in the life of people.
He added that in the past art, people understood the concepts of symbols which were directly connected to the life of people, while today such a relationship does not exist between art and life of people.
